The Expat Living staff picked some of their top places to stay in Asia for under $100 per night. Yes, Trip Advisor is very comprehensive, but a little insider knowledge can be useful! This is tried and tested accommodation, so we hope you find it to be good value too.

NameVilla Siem Reap
Where:Siem Reap, Cambodia
Comment:Good beds, basic shower bathroom. Bit noisy out the back in the mornings. Nice open-air eating/breakfast place with good food. Ten minutes’ walk to down town markets or a quick tuk tuk ride.
Cost:Around US$30 for twin room



Name:Nirwana Gardens
Where:Bintan Island, Indonesia
Comment:The enormous Nirwana Gardens Resort has villas, a hotel and bungalows, but the beach club cabins represent good value. Located right on the beach, this laid back area of the resort has good access to water sports.
Cost:From S$95 but check for specials



Where:Near Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia
Comment:Very friendly manager, great staff, delicious fresh breakfast, bit of an out of the way location but just five minutes drive to Geger Beach – one of the best in Bali.
Cost:Less than S$70 a night for double room



Name:Sunway Putra Hotel
Where:Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Comment:Good room size, close to KL shopping square – right above Park Plaza. Check accommodation booking websites for good deals.
Cost:Around S$100 a night for double room

Where:Kota Kinabalu, Borneo, Malaysia
Comment:Compact but stylish rooms. Extremely friendly and helpful owners. Central to just about anything you would want to do in KK.
Cost:Around S$50 a night for double room

Where:Outside of Kuching, Borneo, Malaysia 
Comment:The location in the old town is ideal;walking distance to everything, but far enough away to avoid the crowds at night. The hotel is situated around a beautiful garden, where you can sip cocktails at sunset or enjoy an excellent breakfast from the on-site restaurant.
Cost:A TripAdvisor favourite, this hotel charges around $92 per night for basic room, but book in March for a stay in May or June and receive a 20-percent discount.



Name:Thavorn Beach Village
Where:Phuket, Thailand
Comment:Four-star accommodation in garden bungalows or seaview bungalow just a step away from secluded beach. Fantastic, enormous pool. Situated in Nakalay Bay about 4km outside Patong.
Cost:From S$75 for a bungalow (cheaper in low season)


Name:Aloft – Sukhumvit 11
Where:Bangkok, Thailand
Comment:Brand new hotel, a member of the Starwood group. Edgy, modern vibe with lots of in-room gadgets. Amazing location, right opposite Bed Supperclub and just a 5minute walk to the BTS.

Room only: 2,111 baht ++ (about $85)



Name:Betel Garden Guest House
Where:Hoi An, Vietnam
Comment:Friendly, small guest house set in a lush garden with swimming pool. Good, cheap meals. 15 minutes’ walk to central Hoi An, along the river. Free bikes.
Cost:From US$50 per night



Name:Ha An Hotel
Where:Hoi An, Vietnam
Comment:Located in Santubong (about 45 minutes from Kuching) and run by friendly husband and wife team, Donald and Marina Tan. A fusion between a traditional stilted Malay home and a longhouse Dayak house. Add in hammocks, palms, gardens, ponds, a pool that runs the length of the property, and a gourmet chef that prepares amazing delicious local and western fare, and this 12- roomed home is transformed into a little jungle oasis.

Comment:Dubbed the best boutique hotel in Hanoi’s Old Quarter, it’s clean, has quick service and a good location.
