Beauty 101: Where to buy makeup for under $20 in Singapore
26 March 2012
A 10-colour eye palette for $15 or oil control pressed powder for only $8.90? You can’t get a better deal than that. Yusrina Yusoff spent an afternoon scouring the shops and found 10 places for affordable cosmetics under $20. From makeup brushes to mascara, prepare to have fun in these stores and spend less than usual!
John Little, Marina Square
This department store may be the last place you would think of going to for a makeup fix. But surprise, surprise, they have a huge range of cult brands from the US and Asia which are quite affordable. If you’d like to try Bare Minerals but the prices seem ridiculous, check out the cheaper alternative, Fresh Minerals. Loose eye shadow retails at $15 with a wide range of colours to choose from. For good powder alternative, look out for Color Inc; their loose powder costs just $9.10. The range also includes lipstick ($8.10) and blush ($9.10). If you have a few extra dollars to spare, head over to the Milani counter. This US cosmetic brand is usually found in Sears, Kmart and Target. Prices start from $15.90 for a lipstick to $27.90 for a powder.
Watsons, various outlets
Also a favourite one-stop beauty hub, Watsons carries pocket-friendly brands such as SilkyGirl and Za. Don’t let the low prices stop you from trying; some of them may work well for you. The Oil Control Pressed Powder costs only $8.90 and their Lash Prism Mascara, $10.90. If you’re looking for a cheap nail polish remover that does it’s job try the Quik Clean Nail Polish Remover at $3.90. For a cheaper alternative to your makeup base, the Za Pore Smoother ($15.90) may be the answer to oily skin problems. It absorbs excess oil and reduces the appearance of pores. Give it a go with the liquid concealer ($13.90) while you’re at it.
Tony Moly, various outlets including Raffles Xchange
Hailing from Korea, Tony Moly has a quality range of cosmetics from lipsticks to makeup tools. Their Kiss Lover lipstick costs $19.90, and Lovely Girl Jelly Lip is $8.90.
Sa Sa, Marina Square
When you have finished at John Little’s head to nearby Sa Sa, a beauty and skincare store that carries brands mostly from Asia Pacific including Cyber Colours and Red Earth. Founded in Australia, Red Earth has a good range of quality products. Lipstick is $9.90 and eye shadow, $16. Once in a while Sa Sa has cheap deals and promotions like Cyber Colours lipstick at $5 (usual $6.90) and two eyeliners and brow pencils for $9.
Topshop, ION and Knightsbridge, Orchard Road
Yes, this fashion forward high street brand also has a collection of makeup and it is rather good. The blush, lipsticks and lip polish are worth a try. Most are under $20.
The Face Shop, various outlets including 313 Somerset
Another Korean import, The Face Shop has more than 10 outlets around Singapore. If you plan to restock your nail polish collection in every colour, stop by The Face Shop and pick up a few at only $2.90 each. Also worth trying is their Black Label lipstick, at $12.90.
Sephora may not be known as a place full of budget cosmetics. But if you look closer, or rather move further inside the store, near the cashier to be precise, there are amazing finds under $20. One product we found was the Benefit Tan About Town Mini Kit ($16), which consists of a travel size foundation, bronzing powder and mascara.
Daiso, various outlets including ION and Plaza Singapura
Daiso has a wide range of cosmetics from eyeliners and eye shadow to various pressed powders and foundation and they even have makeup tools including pencil sharpeners and makeup brush sets. All at $2 each. Bargain.
Famous for selling makeup at low prices, Cherry Culture stocks brands such as NYX, Bloom Cosmetics and Sugar Baby. You can get mascara at US$2.99 and pressed powder at only US$1.99! It may only work on smooth and toned skin though. Or go wild and crazy over their top selling lipstick by Wild and Crazy (US$2), which is apparently always sold out. Shipping to Singapore starts from US$8.95 and delivery takes three to 17 days depending on delivery option selected.
Guardian, various outlets
Besides the usual brands like Revlon and Maybelline, Guardian pharmacies stock other cosmetic brands such as L.A. Girl. For only $15, get 10 eye colours in the High Definition 10 Color Palette, and if you need a basic black eyeliner or nude lip liner, L.A. Girl’s retails for only $5 each.
