Be inspired, dear readers, as Expat Living gets the skinny on popular body-shaping business The Body Firm, from its owner and director MARIANNE DOELE.

Why The Body Firm?
A few years ago, I went to Holland for a holiday and caught up with my best friend who looked absolutely fabulous. She told me she’d had a treatment involving micro-currents and that she lost two sizes within a very short period of time. Another friend of ours did the same treatment and was wearing her bikini again after years of hiding her body away! This really fascinated me, so I decided to see if there was such a system in Singapore. There wasn’t. After lots of research, I decided to introduce it here. Since the product is so good, it’s been a success from the start.

Are you involved much with the Dutch community here?
I’ve been in Singapore for almost five years and running this business for almost three, and all that time I’ve maintained strong ties with the Dutch community. I really admire all women who start their own businesses and are trying to make the best of it. I especially admire my friends Marie Piederiet and Pieter van Houten from Past Perfect Collection who, in a very short period of time, have built their colonial antique business into a great success.

Who are your clients?
They’re mostly female, but more and more men are signing up for help in shaping up or creating that longed-for six-pack. The objective for most customers is to lose inches or gain tone – same for men, though they also want to bulk up. And of course we have a lot of customers who come for facials, manicures and pedicures. They want to be pampered, to feel relaxed and to look pretty.

How are you finding your new location on River Valley Road?
We’re so happy with our new premises. The parking is great and it’s easy to reach by public transport. The look and feel of the salon is modern and fresh.

What products do you use?
It took a long time to decide which products to work with. We chose Living Nature from New Zealand because it is 100-percent pure and has no synthetic chemicals or artificial preservatives. The pure organic market has been trendy for some time, but lots of products that claim to be 100 percent organic are not really. The foundations of our product range are manuka honey and manuka oil – very nourishing for the skin. It’s great for all skin types, but particularly good for people with sensitive skin.

What can we expect to see at The Body Firm in 2010?
Since we moved, we’ve introduced facial treatments, waxing, and manicure-pedicure services. In 2010, we hope to develop into a one-stop beauty spa.
