Are we doomed to be at the mercy of less-than-diplomatic sales staff? Creative Director at Glitterati Latika Alok says having the “ideal” body is all about creating the illusion of balance and proportion. It’s also important that women have confidence. “I had a voluptuous client once who proudly chose a sexy, bright red dress. She was confident!”
“Honestly,” she says with passion, “I hate hearing people being told that they are a certain shape, such as an hourglass or an apple; it’s a label that no one feels good about.”
According to Latika, most women are a combination of several shapes, and there should be no hard-and-fast rules on how to dress. “So, I’m not going to tell someone she’s an inverted triangle. It’s not how anyone wants to see herself.”

| 1. | If you have a smaller upper body, keep the detailing on the upper section of your body. Accessorize with earrings or pendants to draw attention upwards. |
| 2. | Minimise a bigger bust by focusing attention on your lower body. A good way of highlighting your hips is to carry clutches or bags that end at hip-level. |
| 3. | Avoid shift and baby-doll dresses if you’re looking to define your waist, but do consider prints and designs that give the body more definition. |
| 4. | Blessed with broad shoulders? Tops in sheer fabrics are great for creating a softer look while still showing off your assets. |
| 5. | Jersey, satin, polyester and organza can be unforgiving, so you might want to avoid them. |
| 6. | Wearing a dress in one solid colour makes you look taller. Mandarin collars and chokers are good for drawing attention to a long neck. |
| 7. | Empire dresses are very flattering because they draw the body in where it’s the smallest and flow down naturally. |
| 8. | Wear accessories with confidence! You wear your outfit, not the other way around. |
| 9. | Choose dresses and tops in colours that flatter your skin tone. |
| 10. | Wearing underwear that is right for your outfit is imperative. If you need some help, try the latest body-shaping underwear – it’s all the rage among celebrities right now. |
