Moisturisers: picking the right one for you

Moisturisers are aplenty and everyone needs one, even the men in our lives. But how do you find the right one? Don’t look to the lady whom you are lunching with; first look into the mirror and determine your hydration needs. Do you need some repair? Do you have sensitive skin? Oily skin? Answering these questions first will point you in the right direction.

Normal skin:

Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 30, Dermalogica

A medium-weight daily moisturiser with broad spectrum SPF 30 from Dermalogica’s  AGE Smart range with cosmeceutical ingredients that enhance the skin’s natural ability to fight skin-ageing free radicals. I like this one as it doesn’t feel heavy or greasy on the skin in our humid weather and at the same time provides sun protection.

Oily skin:

Pétronille Essentielle Jour Ultra Moisturising Day Cream SPF 10, 50ml with Elixir Contrôle

The brilliant thing about Pétronille Essentielle is that you can modify the active ingredients as you need with their Elixirs (boosters). For example: for oily skin you can add a drop of the Elixir Contrôle into the day cream which has anti-bacterial qualities as well as cell renewal qualities that smooth the appearance of your skin.

Dry/sensitive skin:

ReVive Sensitif Caellular Repair Cream, SPF 15

Just because we live in a humid environment doesn’t mean some people don’t suffer from dry skin. Dry skin can look aged and dull so choose a moisturiser that increases cell renewal. ReVive Sensitif Cellular Repair Cream, SPF 15 does just that: renewing damaged, ageing skin. I was pleasantly surprised that I saw results after one day of use – seriously! If you told me a change would be noticeable immediately, I probably wouldn’t have believed you but speaking from personal experience this stuff has major WOW factor!

Teeny bopper skin:

Dermalogica’s line for ages 21 and under is called Clean Start. Their Welcome Matte, SPF 15 is a lightweight moisturising lotion that won’t clog pores and controls shine.

It’s surprising how many mums think their daughters or sons don’t need to worry about their skin until they are older. Skincare starts from birth with after bath lotions, nappy creams and sunscreen; granted we won’t be exfoliating our six year olds but at the signs of puberty you should definitely get your child on a skincare regimen.

Although most skincare companies put some SPF into their moisturisers these days, you still need added sun protection. Sunscreen is your last step before you start your makeup. Look for both PA+++ and SPF.
