On any given day, I participate in some sort of endurance training – cycling, running or mountain-biking. When I am not training, I love to compete in marathons and triathlons. So, when my knee started hurting during a run a few years ago, I knew it wasn’t good news.

My personal fitness trainer recommended that I go to the Singapore Sports Orthopaedic Surgery Centre. After a combination of sports massage, stretching and physiotherapy, the pain subsided and I was back training in no time.

Last October, I suffered another setback and underwent successful surgery by Dr Chang Haw Chong. I recently ran my first post-surgery marathon. It feels so liberating not to be hindered by any pain or injuries.

Next up – snowboarding in South Korea!

I had been playing golf for 25 years without any medical problems. But my lucky streak came to a screeching halt one sunny day last year while on the course at the Jurong Country Club. I swung my club and was greeted by a horrifying pain in one of my arms. Game over!

Dr Ben Tan at the Singapore Sports Medicine Centre diagnosed the problem as medial epicondylitis, more commonly known as “golfer’s elbow”. He designed a recovery plan that included a combination of shockwave treatment – which is not for the weak – ultrasound, and physiotherapy. I was elated that surgery was not required.

After receiving the scheduled treatments and letting my body recuperate, I anxiously headed back out to the golf course a few months ago. I gently swung and – no pain! Since then, I am literally back in the full swing of things.
