My skin has always been the bane of my life. Having suffered from oiliness and continuous breakouts all my life, it is little wonder that my face looks scarred and rough. Too much time spent in the sun and the natural process of ageing haven’t helped, either.
My chat with Patricia from Glo Aesthetics was enlightening. With the overwhelming number of new products on the market, it was nice to have someone explain what I could realistically expect from an up-to-date treatment.
Firstly, I should stress that Glo Aesthetics doesn’t give you the pampering you associate with a facial. This place is strictly a medical spa, meant for addressing specific skin issues.
Patricia started me off with the Cutera LimeLight Facial ($300), an IPL-based (intense pulsed light) treatment for for redness, tiny veins, brown spots and sun damage. This is a non-invasive approach to skin rejuvenation and offers the advantage of improving skin tone and imperfections associated with aging and photodamage.
Once my goggles were firmly in place, a cooling gel was applied and the LimeLight laser device passed over my skin. Although I jumped the first few times the pulses of light were delivered, the stinging sensation was certainly tolerable (and settings can be changed if the pain is too intense). Immediately after the treatment, my skin was slightly pink and the pigmentation was already starting to darken. This, I was told, would continue, and the dead skin would eventually flake off within one to three weeks.
The next step was to tackle my congested pores. For this, Patricia recommended a 60-percent-strength glycolic peel ($100). After it was applied, my skin began to sting and felt very itchy, but in the quest for beauty I was aware that sometimes a bit of pain must be endured. After approximately two minutes, a neutraliser was applied and the stinging stopped, which was an immense relief. My skin was then washed, moisturised and a sunscreen was applied.
Finally, I received the Titan skin-tightening treatment ($1,200), using the same device as the LimeLight treatment, but with a different handpiece. The idea is that infrared light heats the dermis below the skin’s surface, and this heat causes immediate collagen contraction, resulting in tighter skin. This was actually a pleasant and relaxing experience with no discomfort whatsoever, because during the procedure my skin was continuously cooled. It took approximately an hour to do the entire face.
It’s been just two days since my treatment and already I’m happy to report a definite clarity to my skin – I’ve even noticed some of the darkened pigmentation has begun to drop off. I haven’t noticed much from the Titan treatment yet, but this is because results are gradual. New collagen forms over a period of three to six months, and sometimes up to three treatments are required for optimal results.
Treatment packages are available.
