We wanted freedom from our contact lenses, so we looked into LASIK surgery. We did research on a few surgeons but decided to go with Dr Jerry Tan after reading his book LASIK SURGERY – The Laser Way to Better Sight. He provided comprehensive, easy-to-read explanations for the various procedures along with the pros and cons of each option.
One thing that put us both at ease was Dr Tan’s thoroughness. He performed a battery of tests in order to customise the surgery for optimal results. After our initial examinations, we discovered that Mike was a candidate for monovision surgery. Now he can see long-distance, while still being able to read his Blackberry.
Dr Tan meticulously explained the procedures’ potential side effects. He answered all of our questions in layman’s terms, and he is the only surgeon in Asia using a fifth-generation IntraLase Laser. Dr Tan is confident in his abilities and enjoys what he does – and it shows.

Losing 14 kilograms in two weeks may seem like a dream come true to some people, but for me it was a nightmare. When a sudden bout of immobilising back pain turned into major kidney and lung failure, I knew something was really wrong. I was fighting against an acute bacterial infection that could have claimed my life.
During my month-long hospital stay, Dr Wong of Infectious Disease Partners controlled all of my medication. The in-hospital care was excellent, and Dr Wong carefully administered antibiotics that did not have any side-effects that could threaten my fragile condition. He was calm and always kept me informed about all of his decisions.
After I started to recover, Dr Wong provided me with intravenous antibiotics that I could take at home. This allowed me to recuperate in comfort and privacy. Staff from the clinic even came around on a Sunday to replenish my medication so that I did not have to make a trip to the hospital.

I have been a music teacher since 1985 in New Zealand and England. Through the years, a combination of over-use and illness left my voice extremely weak and hoarse. After I sang with a rock band for an AIDS benefit in 2003, my singing voice never came back.
A doctor at the college where I teach referred me to Dr Lau Chee Chong at ENT CC Lau. After a thorough examination, Dr Lau informed me that I had nodules on my vocal cords that needed to be removed. Because singing is a huge part of my professional, personal and spiritual life, I was extremely nervous about undergoing surgery that I worried might jeopardise my ability to sing.
Dr Lau was very relaxing and reassuring about the procedure. He is a very personable and family-oriented doctor. He showed me pictures of his family, pointing out his child who was on a long waitlist to attend the college where I teach.
Despite all my fears, this story has a happy ending. My voice returned, and I am able to sing once again. And, the child that Dr Lau first pointed out to me in his office is now one of my students!

I collided with a car while motorcycling in an isolated part of Malaysia with friends, and fractured a number of bones throughout my body including both legs, my right hip and my right elbow. After the most harrowing five hours of my life, I arrived at Gleneagles Hospital to find Dr Tho Kam San and the other doctors of Island Orthopaedic Consultants literally standing at the door waiting for my arrival.
Since that day, I have had numerous surgeries to make me whole again. Not only has Dr Tho performed each surgery, but he has visited me in the hospital and been present at every follow-up visit. During the entire ordeal, he kept me and my wife (a nurse) informed and answered all our questions. He is prompt, professional and genuinely concerned for my wellbeing.
Due to the extent of my injuries, there was a substantial chance that I might not live. If it weren’t for my friends, Ravi, Singh and Mark, I would never have made it back to Singapore. If it wasn’t for Dr Tho, I wouldn’t be alive today.

I had surgery to remove a portion of my thyroid in Ireland ten years ago. I was in the hospital for two weeks, needed physiotherapy to recover, and lost my voice for three months. At least the problem was solved – or so I thought.
You can imagine my dismay when I learned last year that I needed a total thyroidectomy. Remembering the difficulties I encountered with my first surgery, I was exceptionally nervous, but Dr Mark of Ascent ENT Specialist Group was reassuring. He outlined the entire procedure and told me that I would be out of hospital in a day or two. True to his word, I left the hospital two days later! I had no problems eating or talking, either. Plus, Dr Mark did an amazing job with the scar – it looked even better than the first one!
Following the surgery, I went running three times a week and ate healthy food. Yet I felt lethargic and noticed some weight gain that I thought was inevitable. However, Dr Mark ran some tests and altered the dosage of my medication. I stopped gaining weight, and have just run my first 10k!

I had been living with chronic sinusitis for longer than I care to remember. Headaches, difficulty breathing, and a blocked feeling in my face were a constant part of my life. I was always tired, even after the rare occasion when I slept for ten hours.
Just before last Christmas, Dr Leong from Ascent ENT Specialist Group performed a two-hour surgery to completely revamp my sinus cavity. After surgery, I was elated to be able to breathe freely and easily again.
Through a sleep study, Dr Leong discovered that sleep apnoea was the cause of my lethargy. I was fitted for a mouth-guard to wear at night, which enables me to sleep better and feel rested when I wake up.
Dr Leong is an excellent physician. He is patient, thorough and extraordinarily competent. I owe him a great deal for the positive changes that he has made in my life.

After three months of breathing difficulties, I decided it was time to find professional help. My doctor referred me to Dr Eng at Ascent ENT Specialist Group.
My intuition that something was wrong turned out to be right. I was diagnosed with nasal polyps. I spent a few days in the hospital last April to have them removed. The surgery was straightforward, and the next day I was up and able to walk around. Despite all the gauze, I was instantly able to breathe much better. I have not encountered any breathing problems since the surgery.
Dr Eng was with me through this process from start to finish. He combines incredible knowledge with a stellar bedside manner. The equipment at the clinic is very modern and state-of-the-art. On a personal level, I felt an immediate kinship with him since he received his training in my hometown of Dundee, Scotland.

Back in the 1980s, my husband, Thomas, suffered two heart attacks. Then in October of 2005, he suffered a stroke that left him paralysed on the right side of his body. Due to his condition, the types of treatments that he could endure were very limited. A friend suggested microcurrent therapy, but this wasn’t available in Singapore at that time.
In January 2007, a woman named Kathryn Lee opened the Opulence Bio-Regeneration Therapy Centre after witnessing the amazing results that microcurrent treatment had on victims of strokes, slipped discs, muscular problems and other ailments.
The technology treats at the cellular level, regenerating cell activities and promoting soft-tissue recovery and blood circulation. The therapy is safe, non-invasive and painless. It often promotes recovery from conditions that have not responded to other treatments.
In conjunction with medical support, physiotherapy and taking nutritional supplements, micro-current therapy has helped my husband to walk properly again. No one would ever know that he suffered a stroke. Previously confined to home, he has returned to his normal daily routine and is travelling again. We both feel that our lives have been renewed.

After my second pregnancy, the veins in my legs started to cramp and swell to the point where I needed to wear compression stockings all the time. I had two “stripping” surgeries back home where they literally removed veins from my legs. Talk about painful! Not only did I miss weeks of work for each surgery, but the pain and infections in my legs eventually returned.
After reading about laser treatments at The Vein Clinic, I decided to book an appointment to learn more. Upon meeting Dr John Tan, I was very impressed with his friendly disposition. He walked me through the entire process and made me feel safe enough to give the laser treatment a shot.
I never thought that a two-hour procedure could cure a problem that I had had for the last 20 years. The laser treatment was painless, and my downtime was minimal. My legs no longer hurt, and they look more attractive, too. Dr Tan still calls me to ask how I am doing, and each time I tell him how thrilled I am with the results.

When we learned that my father had lung cancer that had metastasised to his backbone, we sought treatment at Johns Hopkins Singapore International Medical Centre.
My dad underwent one full cycle of chemotherapy and two rounds of maintenance chemotherapy under the care of Dr Alex Chang.
The practitioners, nurses and staff at JHS were caring and helpful during what was an extremely difficult time for my family. I felt comfortable leaving my parents in Singapore when I had to return to Jakarta for work, because I knew they were in good hands. Even after we took my father back to Jakarta, I was able to communicate with the doctors and nurses at JHS by phone and email.
I can speak for my entire family when I say that we are happy with the care that my father received at JHS. We know that he was being treated by the very best.

The only regret that I have about seeking treatment from Dr Yung Shing Wai for the bunions on my feet is not contacting him sooner! For six years, I had been unable to walk properly or wear stylish, feminine shoes. I spent so much time thinking about seeing a doctor, instead of actually doing something about it.
Dr Yung was honest with me about the surgery as well as the expected side-effects and recovery time. I had surgery on both feet at the same time. Dare I say that the surgery was rather pleasant? I did not experience any pain, and I didn’t need any painkillers during the healing process. I did follow Dr Yung’s orders by being careful and wearing the special shoes that I was given.
I am thrilled that my bunions are gone and my feet look like they did years ago before my problems started. I would recommend this surgery to anyone whose life is limited by painful bunions.

I started noticing changes in my face this year, much to my dismay. My skin was losing its elasticity, my pores were quite obvious, and I had increased pigmentation from the sun. Also, even though I was working out frequently, I still couldn’t get rid of unwanted body fat.
I had three treatments at Dr Valentin Low’s clinic. First, I received Thermage to firm up my sagging face, followed by Laser Skin Resurfacing to remove my pigmentation. At my second visit, I started Ultrasonic Lipolysis treatments to improve my body contours. After just two sessions, I could feel my skirt was looser. Within six weeks, I lost five kilograms, and the physical appearance of my thighs dramatically improved.
Dr Valentin Low is a friendly and attentive doctor who empathises with his patients. He has helped me gain so much confidence. My skin is more radiant and firm, and now I can even wear figure-hugging dresses!

On a whim, I stuck my head into Dr Nawaz’s office while at Camden Medical Centre. Having seen vein specialists in two countries in the past, I was not new to the issue of varicose veins. Since my prior treatments actually exacerbated my condition, I was sceptical that anything could be done to ease my painful legs.
Dr Nawaz completely won me over before my initial consultation ended. Because my situation was complex, he treated me with a combination of surgery and laser treatments. Unlike the other physicians that I had seen, he concentrated on finding the cause of my problem, and not just treating the symptoms.
I truly believe that Dr Nawaz is brilliant. He was a consummate professional throughout my entire treatment.
My legs look and feel 100-percent better. The aesthetic boost is a plus, but I am so elated to be rid of the achy, swollen legs that I have been living with for years. I feel like I have been given a new pair of legs.

While standing in knee-deep water admiring the beautiful Bali beach, a powerful rip current suddenly pulled my father and me out to sea. The harder we fought, the farther we drifted from the shore. Our harrowing ordeal ended when lifeguards eventually rescued us. But through my struggle to keep my father’s head above water and get us both back to shore, I ruptured a disc in my back.
Once we had returned to Singapore, I was quickly admitted into surgery under the care of Dr Prem Pillay from the Neuro Spine and Pain Center Singapore. He and his team were fantastic – friendly, reliable and quickly able to identify exactly what needed to be done. I appreciated his realistic approach to the more challenging parts of the surgery, including the pain to expect and how to manage it.
Three days after surgery, I was able to get up and walk around the room. Under Dr Pillay’s care, I began a rehabilitation programme that included three months of aqua-therapy. Today, I am steadily making progress towards a full recovery.

“If the discs in your neck move another millimetre, you could be paralysed.”
This sobering statement from my doctor finally prompted me to have surgery on the slipped discs in my neck.
After the surgery, my doctor recommended that I go to the AquaPhysio Rehab Center. I loved doing my rehab in the water because it was soothing, and the exercises were gentler than traditional therapy. I was psychologically run-down from having lived for so long with pinched nerves, and the water was the perfect relaxing remedy. The therapists were so kind and were willing to work at a pace that I found comfortable. Aqua-therapy also promotes faster healing.
Today I am pretty much pain-free. After being told I might never ride again, I am now riding every day. As the head instructor for the Riding for Disabled Association of Singapore, I am able to lift children from their wheelchairs and place them onto the horses. I am eternally grateful to the AquaPhysio Rehab Center for getting me back in the saddle and living my passion again.
