Serendipitous Slimming

January should have been a period of penance for the calorific sins of the festive season. It didn’t work out that way – I spent most of my birthday month quaffing Veuve and incrementally guzzling my vast chocolate fudge birthday cake. A triple-whammy slimming treatment from Vedure is exactly what I need.
As it happens, I’m a little early for my Friday afternoon appointment at the salon in Wheelock Centre. Twenty minutes is sufficient time for me to wander through ION and buy a very, very form-fitting – okay, too tight – cocktail dress at Warehouse. It’s perfect for tomorrow night’s party. As for the small matter of breathing, I think, some shallow panting above its bustier top should keep me from passing out.
Step One: Infra-Ultra (15 mins, $250; 20 mins, $300)
According to therapist Su, this high-tech Italian machine uses ultrasound to mobilise fat, and high-powered infrared rays for healing. Most people choose to have it on their tummy.
How does it feel? After measuring my middle, Su applies gel to my skin, then moves the applicator head over the offending fatty deposits. It’s a comfortable sensation, but the ultrasound causes a peculiar, whining buzz to reverberate through your head, like having a nest of hornets in your skull.
How does it work? The vibration of the ultrasound waves generates pressure that breaks down fat cells. This is also known as fat cavitation; tiny air bubbles in the fat cells explode, destroying the structure of the fat cells, after which they are eliminated from the body via the lymphatic system. Step Two encourages this elimination.
Step Two: Polar Slim (15 mins, $250; 20 mins, $300)
Radio-frequency is considered a non-surgical alternative to invasive surgery, and this breakthrough technology employs deep tissue healing to stimulate collagen remodelling and tighten the skin.
How does it feel? I normally start snoring during a treatment, but the sucking action and the occasional slurping sound of the applicator head against my fat-rolls keeps me more or less awake.
How does it work? It helps to prevent skin becoming flabby and loose as a result of weight loss; what’s more, it has a light vacuum action that enhances the lymphatic drainage of fat cells that have been destroyed during Step One.
Step Three: Miracle Body Wrap ($250)
After applying a serum to my torso and upper limbs, Su efficiently mummifies me with a whole roll of plastic wrap, helps me lower my stiffened body onto a heated bed then covers me with towels and a thermal blanket.
How does it feel? Comfy for the first ten minutes, then increasingly hot and sweaty for the remaining ten. Su kindly dabs the sweat that is running into my eyes.
How does it work? Sweating efficiently eliminates toxins, including the residue of broken-down fat, by increasing the circulation of both blood and lymph.
The proof of the pudding, as they say, is in the eating. Not only did my after-treatment waist measure at least a centimetre less, but the new dress zipped up noticeably more easily than it had done in the shop – and I wore it the next night without too much pain. What more could a party girl ask for?
